My philosophy.
20 YEARS OF TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND CLIENT FEEDBACK HAS HELPED ME FORM WHAT I CALL SWI-5. IT STANDS FOR MY 3 CORE PRINCIPLES AND THE 5 KEY FITNESS FUNDAMENTALS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL TO HEALTHY, SAFE TRAINING AND THE ESSENTIALS TO SUPPORT CLIENT GOALS.
Core Principles
In any serious endeavor, taking a moment to dig into and build a healthy roadmap is key. My Core Principles (the SWI in SWI-5) are the starting point for us to get clear on where you are, where you want to go and crafting smart, safe, thoughtful, diverse phases and programs that keep your mindset and lifestyle just as engaged as your body.
Fitness Fundamentals
My training experience across big box chains and boutique gyms has given me a perspective that has formed my fundamentals. In most cases they go against how big box, “quantity over quality” training models work. I don’t like what I see in most gyms, from the style of programs, to the lack of attention to client needs, and the constant upselling. Here are the 5 Fitness Fundamentals that are industry standards that I have put my spin on from my own workout routine and working with clients to get real results.
Let’s not forget these important pillars that are critical to any program.
-
The time after exercise to rest (sleep), refuel (individualized nutrition/hydration), and prepare for the next workout (recovery tool/practices).
-
An sequence of controlled movements to help make your workout safe and more effective by increasing blood flow to muscles, increasing mobility and preparing the body for activity.
-
FITT stands for Frequency (how often), Intensity (light, moderate, vigorous), Time (length of activity) and Type (what activity you are doing). These principles are used to develop specialized programs based on desired goals and outcomes but each component is interconnected.
-
Using time effectively for workouts will maximize your results and keep you on track. From blocking time for workouts that fit your schedule, workout logging and tracking your progression or milestones, efficient program design based on time you have, pre-setting up your workout at the studio to not waste time and flexibility based on your calendar.
-
It is important to make sure when you are working out that you are mastering the moves so they can deliver the results you want. Exercises done wrong, without the correct form are less effective and potentially dangerous.
-
You know consistency is key in fitness. So let’s be realistic about your desired goals and the time you have so we can maximize the effort.
-
Staying in tune on this fitness journey means that we have open, honest conversations at the start, from discussing where you are, where you want to be and then in program/in workout on how you are feeling. It’s about making sure you are heard and you hear me.
